Some days, I simply lack the willpower. It’s like my willpower battery is drained.

Sunday, I woke up feeling overwhelmed, drained and discouraged. So, I became rooted to the bed (or remained in bed all day). While this made me feel unproductive and went against my usual goals, sometimes it’s necessary.

My usual fix for feeling down is any kind of physical activity – a run or a trip to the gym. Unfortunately, my muscles were too sore for exercise that day.

What happened? I spent the entire day in bed. And I loved it.

I completed the bare minimum work I had planned and then re-watched a show while snacking throughout the day. The next day, I felt completely re-energized and 100% guilt-free.

Some days, you simply won’t have the willpower. You’ll feel depleted. That’s normal. It happens.

Life isn’t perfect, and we don’t always wake up feeling our best. There will be days when we have to accept that we can’t accomplish everything on our to-do list and need to rest.

So, can bed rotting be considered a self-care strategy? Yes!

Maybe you had a tough week, work was stressful, or you slept poorly. Bed rotting can be a way to restore some of your missing energy. However, this shouldn’t become a habitual activity. It’s meant for times when you’re truly at your physical, mental, and social limits.

As a side note, some people find they work better in bed. Writers like Woody Allen and Truman Capote were known to write while lying down. Capote even called himself a “completely horizontal author”.

However, if you find yourself spending several days in bed, feeling low and unlike yourself, it’s important to consider it there might be an underlying reason. This behavior could be a coping mechanism for depression or anxiety, and in such cases, it’s crucial to address it for your well-being.

While bed rotting, you can engage in various relaxing activities. This could include reading, playing with your pet, watching TV, playing video games, writing, or simply spending time on your phone. Choose what suits your mood and preferences.

Remember, maintaining some form of physical exercise throughout the week and taking care of your body is still important.

Wishing you a great day, whether you choose to spend it in bed or not.
