There are countless baking and cooking disasters to choose from, but my mom’s Christmas Eve caramel fiasco takes the cake. It happened when I was 12, and I still chuckle about it.
My aunt and mom were busy preparing desserts, and my mom was tasked with making profiteroles. She’d already nailed the dough and custard, but things took a turn when it came to the caramel.
As soon as she poured the hot caramel, the plastic began to melt, creating a sticky mess on my aunt’s floor. My mom and I burst into laughter. Needless to say, she had no idea what she was actually doing.
There are three important lessons here:
- Hot caramel and plastic don’t mix.
- Don’t blindly trust someone’s experience.
- Always trust your own judgment.
