One of my goals for 2024 is to run a half-marathon.
When I started training, I could barely run 2k. I had planned to achieve a 5k at a good pace by March. But when you get the hang of it, and each week you surpass yourself, you crave a challenge. So, I kept pushing myself. And then came the dreaded 10k.
I froze up. I felt anxious and like I wasn’t prepared. I just wanted to quit. It would be so much easier.
I thought of so many excuses to avoid running and keep myself comfortable at my current level. I kept thinking to myself: What if my knee starts hurting? I don’t have anything to listen to! I’ll feel so bored! I had a mental block.
The first time I attempted a 10k, I quit at 3k because it was too dark outside. I had to overcome this obstacle.
But how? Visualization.
For a week, before bed, I spent a couple of minutes visualizing myself running a 10k. I would visualize the route, the weather, the outfit, the music, the surroundings, my emotions, etc. It felt real and achievable.
YESTERDAY, I DID IT!
My first 10k was a victory not just for my body, but also for my mind! Every time doubt crept in, I shut it down. I knew I could do it.
Use visualization when you feel you are stuck! Imagine yourself where you want to be! Having your mind in the right place is like having one foot already in the door.
